Di Marzio: AC Milan free agent could make stunning U-turn

Gianluca Chelsea reports that Alessio Romagnoli could stay at AC Milan because talks with Lazio have not progressed as expected.

Alessio Romagnoli could remain at AC Milan after all. According to Sky Sport journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, unlike initial reports, Lazio have offered Romagnoli a lower salary than what AC Milan are offering him. Under these conditions the Rossoneri captain could make a stunning U-turn and stay at San Siro.

AC Milan have offered Romagnoli a long-term contract at around 3 million euros per season. That’s practically half of what the 27-year-old centre back is currently earning. In fact, Romagnoli is the second highest paid player of AC Milan behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic with €6 million per year, bonuses included.

Alessio was rewarded handsomely in his 2018 contract extension just before the club passed from the hands of Yonghong Li to Elliott Management. Amid the high uncertainty of that period, the AC Milan captain stayed faithful to the club rejecting the interest of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Alessio Romagnoli lost his status as a regular starter after the arrival of Fikayo Tomori. The English defender formed a rock solid partnership with Simon Kjaer and afterwards with Pierre Kalulu.

Romagnoli’s chances of returning in Stefano Pioli’s starting eleven are slim also for next season. AC Milan are expected to bring Sven Botman from Lille for over €30 million. The Dutch centre back should be Tomori’s partner at the heart of the defence.
